PrEP1 – Pilot study

Aim and objectives
The project aims to serve as a feasibility study in making PrEP available to MSM at high risk of infection on a trial basis.
The objectives are, to:
- test the acceptability of partially self-financed daily PrEP
- examine the pattern of adherence to daily PrEP
- evaluate the practicability of an incentivized model for PrEP
- trial-run the system for monitoring the use of PrEP.
The Joint Chinese University of Hong Kong – New Territories East Cluster Clinical Research Ethics Committee has approved this study (Ref. No.: 2016.470) and is authorised to access the participants’ records related to the study for ethics review purpose. Study design

Participants will be followed up for 48 weeks. PrEP will be prescribed to participants in the first 30 weeks on a partial payment basis. During this prescription period, participants will have to take medicine daily; visit the clinic regularly for body check-up, HIV and STI tests, complete questionnaire, make payment and collect prescription. At week 48, participants will be contacted for follow-up questionnaire.
Eligibility criteria
To join the study, you must:
- be male, aged 18 or above, and had anal sex with another man; and
- normally reside in Hong Kong; and
- have never used PrEP; and
- be inclined to have unprotected anal sex in the coming months; and
- be willing to partly pay for PrEP; and
- be HIV negative; and
- be HBsAg negative; and
- have normal renal function

Body check-up & tests:
- Renal function

- Syphilis, NG/CT
Urine samples will be collected.
Fingerprick rapid tests will be performed.
